The Taf Fechan River lies on the very edge of the South Wales Coalfield. The water here cuts a deep narrow gorge through an impressive thickness of 350 million year old Carboniferous Limestone that lies beneath the Coalfield. This site and its rocks are integral to the geological and industrial story of South Wales.
Lying adjacent to some of Wales most disadvantaged and troubled communities, developing a project at Taf Fechan had its own problems, with antisocial behaviour being the undoing of several past attempts. We have therefore developed a virtual geology trail based on mobile phone technology. As this has little or no physical presence on the ground, there is nothing to vandalise or replace, and no unsightly panels to detract from the scenic vistas.
